2001 Chevy Blazer water pump

Brother has a 2001 Blazer, 4.3, 4wd. How and the heck do you get the fan and fan clutch assemply off the water pump?? I"m assuming that it has to come off before you can get the waterpump out, or at least it appears that way. I"m assuming the big nut between the fan and waterpump is whats holding it on, but how do you keep the water pump from turning?? Any help would be great.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy new year, Happy Kwanza, Happy Honukka, or whatever you need to be happy about!!!

A special wrench and water pump holding tool is made for that job on the 4.3. If you have a Checker or Autozone, they will rent or lend the tool kit if you buy their pump.

Kind of a must have tool because the nut can be holy-crap tight.Counter-clockwise to loosen.

You have my sympathies. It's the same on a 5.7 Tahoe. The wrench grabs 2 of the bolts that attach the pulley to the water pump shaft
allowing you to get another wrench on the nut.

I assume this is the same as the '99 blazer. My wife came home from work during harvest with anti-frezze running out of it. It looked difficult to replace and I didn't have the time so I brought it to the dealer. The waterpump alone cost about $200 plus labor, plus something else, and I had them do an oil change while it was there, that was about $400 bill.

Leave the belt on to aid in removal. Put a large wrench on the big nut of the fan clutch. Then get a BFH and give it a few whacks to loosen it up. Normal thread so lefty loosy.

The easiest way to get them off is with a pneumatic hammer wrench. The wrench set is a little pricey, but it really cuts down on cussing. Works just like an impact. They can be really tough to get them off otherwise.

wow it sounds like a major pain to do one, im lucky i guess, my old chevy has the old style "good" engine, 4 fan bolts, 4 water pump bolts 2 brackets all with plenty of room, of course being a old chevy, after 25 years and 110,000 miles of hard use the factory water pump is still going, got to love old iron

2 loosen the nut you turn it the same way the fan turns,,, I have special tools for this but the first thang I grab is a wrench I opened up to fit the nut and strike the other end with a hammer,,, normaly if this does not work i grab a air hammer and hit the nut with a chisel bit,,, GM's give up EZ,,, dodge and fords sometimes are hard to remove but all will spin off once they are broke free,,, a hammer and chisel will work also,,, keep in mind to loosen turn the way the fan turns,, lefty Lucy law does not apply here
