I would appreciate any help in smoothing out a rough idle on my Ford 5000 gas tractor. It stumbles between 700-1000 RPMs. I've rebuilt the carb., installed new disbutor cap, rotor, plugs, points, condenser, and plug wires. It runs fine at higher speed and under load although it likes the choke out just a little unless it's real hot in the summer. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Chuck.

check the advance weights in the distributor and see if they are hanging up. you should be able to gently twist the rotor and it should snap back . could be some rust or something causing them to drag. you could also put a timing lite on the motor and watch the marks as you increase engine rpm. should show a steady advance. also check the distributor bushings, try and wiggle shaft side to side and watch the point gap.

Besides what glernnster says, the fact that it likes the choke could be due to a lean condition. In cold weather it's common to have the the carb lean out because the air density is greater. Try adjusting the mixures screws a little richer and see if that helps. You should be able to accellerate from high to low rpms without a stumble or cough when you have it right.

Since it's happening around 700-1000 rpm the possibility exists that your trasition port is dirty. (On may carbs, the throttle plate is closed at idle and the fuel and air come through an idle port. As the throttle opens the fuel comes from a transistion port on the downstream side of the throttle plate.)

Another possibility is that you have an air leak around the metering section of the carb(Throttle shaft seals, connect flange between carb and intake manifold, or manifold to head connection or a cracked/rust hole in the intake manifold).

If it's got the Holley carb like mine they are difficult to get right. I have a 5000 with a Holley and it has the same faults. Usually it's a problem on the accelerator pump on the side of the carb for a Zenith. Look over on the Ford forum, and search Holley. There's lots of posts, but most guys change the carb. If you rebuilt it, it seems you must get the correct kit from CNH.
