Critters On My Crib

I have a round wire corn crib for my ear corn storage. I'm having a major problem with coons, deer, etc. eating away through the wire. They eat the kernals off the ear on anything sticking out or inbetween the wire. I have three layers of wire from the ground up about 50 inches. Everytime in snows I can go out there and find numours critter tracks around the crib. I have a live trap out there and will catch a coon now and then but not too often. I already work all night at my REAL job so I can't stand guard all night. I grind the corn up for steer feed and it lowers the quality of the feed for sure. Thank you in advance for suggestions in elemenating this problem.

Some electric wire about 6" off the ground and another run about 30" off the ground should do it. Clip on plastic insulators will make an easy install.

I had the same problem, until a blacksnake moved in. We used to scare each other half to death at least once a week.

Thought about the electric fence too since I have some around a lot about 30ft. away from the crib already. But the cats seem to not to be bothered by the electric fence so I figured the coons would'nt be either. May be worth a try though. Thanks

big ole dog that don't like rodents or uninvited guest should do the trick but you would be surprised what a Jack Russel Terrier or should I say "Jack Russel Terror" can do for pest like rats coons and yes even Deer they are great little dogs just fence the area in and throw a couple in and boy they hate rats and will out hunt a big tom cat ANY day

Electric fence around the sweet corn patch in the summer keeps them out of there, so I don't know why it wouldn't work to keep them away from a corn crib.....

I've often wondered how those wire cribs stood up to pests. Now I know.

I put 2 electric fence wires around the garden last summer about 8 inches above the ground. Kept the coons out.

Gee whiz critters and corn. They will quit feasting as soon as they have picked each kernel clean that can be reached. If you find a successful way of controlling them let us know. I have about 30 wild turkeys and at least a dozen deer with countless raccoon and opossum that feed out of our bunker silo. I'm not sure if we feed more wild life than beef. But, our grandchildren will spend hours watching the critters on a shiny winters day. I guess the feed we lose is a trade off for the hours we watch them.

My Australian Shepherd will not allow any strange critters around the place. So far he has gotten 6 raccoons, 2 squirrels and uncounted mice. Not a groundhog in sight. He likes to work the night shift scurity detail and sleep during the day. Quick enough to catch mice in the shop or barn... Gene
