Propane information

I have a question,

How many gallons does it take to properly fill one of those BBQ sized tanks that they usually exchange.

I had mine filled at a gas dealer and was upprised to see how much venting they did, what with the newer valve inside tank type tank.

I was told it could take as much as 4.7 gallons by the guy filling it, yet the meter read 4.7

I asked, as I told a story of the next door neighbor who has a large tank and must have agreements with numerous delivery companies. I saw one delivery tanker open their vent with a cloud apparently trying to make room in their tank to make a sale.

As I told the story he slowed the venting process from cloud to whisper.

Propane is pumped into a tank as a liquid. Most tanks are filled to 80-85% with liquid. The tank valve has a dip tube which allows liquid to bleed out when the tank is full. The reason the bleed valve is opened is to tell when the tank is full. Liquid propane will make a cloud as you say but vapor will not. DH
