Sidewalk salt or softner salt for ice?

Can you use water softner salt for melting ice on concrete? Im kinda wondering if they increase the price for sidewalk salt just because it for melting ice. What do you use for melting ice off concrete?

I used softener salt on the sidewalk once and it gave the sidewalk a bad case of acne. Haven't used anything since then. Jim

Some sidewalk salt is Calcium Chloride, not Sodium Chloride of table salt and softener salt. All these salts work by lowering the freezing point of water when they get dissolved and being to not work about zero.

It is not good to use any kind of salt on concrete. It will cause it to blister and crack over time. Spend a little more $$ and get something that will not harm the concrete or the grass.

As others have said salt is a no no. Most precast companies void all warrenty with the use of salt. Yes they can tell if you used it.

If you can use sand or ashes it is so much better for the concrete. No doubt they track in the house, but most times it is a better option, and far cheaper to buy.

Once you get about so many birthdays behind ya it seems fallin just isn't as much fun as it used to be. (we still laugh however) Therefore salt is better than icing down your tail bone. However salt is salt, cattle salt I think is the cheapest.

Better to screw up the concrete.A security guard fell on the ice and ended up in a nursing home .Using too much salt is the problem.I use water softener salt or livestock salt.Wood ashes and cat litter or oil dry.Just take your calcultor when buying.Oil dry has gone up, now 15 cent a lb,cat litter is 10 cents.Better to wash the floor than end up with a broken hip or concussion.Wood ashes work fine.Just be sharp enough to keep nails out of your stove.

Softener salt is just purified rock salt. So it will work for melting ice. I very rarely use salt. If you keep your sidewalk clear of snow, you won't have a problem with ice.

Pure ammonia Nitrate in bags.
Works better at cool temps to melt ice too. Makes the grass grow green as well. Just set the water sprinkler up in the spring to keep the grass from burning.

I'd use the softener salt. Then if you miss a little and someone slips it won't hurt as bad when they fall........

Have a Merry Christmas!

Ok, Now that was kinda clever, and I did'nt see it coming either.

Here I sit, and could probably have my taxes done if I would stop goofing off.
