putting chains on

I got some random chains for my old FE 35 and tried putting them on but after I tightened them they rubbed on the fender supports.Never having done this before I'm wondering if I can alter the chains to fit or do I need to flip the tires around 180 degrees to get more clearance. Are the chains s'posed to fit just over the lugs on the edge of the tires? TOM

hi, the chains on my 135 mf fit great. they are duo chains and cover the entire tire tread and part of the sidewall maybe 5 inches of it. i would say to adjust the tires out a bit before cutting and splicing the chains. but its your tractor.

Any chance of taking the fenders off? It might not be considered safe by some, but grandpa plowed snow and fed round bales of hay with an 860 Ford for thirty years. He always took the fenders off for the winter and put a large counter weight on the 3pt. This way the chains didn't beat the fenders all up.

I just put my chains on this weekend. I ended up changing the offset on the rims. I have just totally swapped the tires out but I also replaced my mailbox the next spring because my tires were wider than normal.

I just take the fenders off with an air wrench. It is much easier than switching tires as both back tires are loaded with fluid. Then I use tarp strapes crimped on the chains on the outside to keep them tight....JB

Ya know,I never thought of taking the fenders off.I would try it tomorrow but it's s'posed to be -15C as a high, too cold to be messin with metal out in the unheated shed!!
