Unless you have access to a reel grinder and a backlapping outfit it will be quite difficult to keep this unit sharp enough to cut grass evenly. Then there is the bedknife that will need replacing each time the reels are ground and sometimes in between grinding. I work at the local golf course and we usually pay $90-125.00 for having each reel ground and then there is the price of the bearings and seals plus the bedknife replacement. A reel type mower does not cut well if the grass is over 1" tall for us. All in all they are expensive to keep up and require some adjusting almost every time you use them. Great for golf course greens and tees and maybe banks or other people/companies that have a deep pocket to keep them up.

Top of the line mower in their day but suited for a golf course or sod farm. Most all golf courses went to lighter weight 5 gang mowers and now will cross cut fairways. In the past they were always just cut up and down. That one looks in primo shape though. 2 speed gear box on the front hydraulic pump if I remember right so reel speed can be varied for conditions. The hydraulic reels will cut wetter grass better than ground drive units but any reel mower will only cut grass as high as half the diameter of the reel. Hit a little rock or something and the reel can be ruined. The later Jacobsen F10/F20 and HF 15's sold in Canada didn't have the box behind the operators seat because the stupid Gov't. in their infinite wisdom considered them a truck and therefore the duty and everything else was rediculously high. They couldn't understand that they were a highly specialized machine. Canadian machines had a big useless triangle deal where the box is. Many golf courses had 2 HF 15's and they weren't cheap when they were new. Dave
