Hey Allan: 1066 not too far from you.

I was poking around on Craigslist, just being snoopy as to possible loader for mine. There is one with a loader, grapple, and 9 ft grader blade mounted under it in Longmont, CO, white cab. They claim it is hydrostatic, I didn't think any of the 1066's were set up that way. DOUG

Can't say exactlly how all that played out, but the early ones were 1066 Hydros, which later was designated the Hydro 100.

Don't think that there were ever any 966 Hydros, were there?

Don't know fer sure,

Allan

Allan:
I've been poking around on Nebraska tractor test website, the hydro's are 666, 86, and 70 in both gas and diesel versions with 1973 tests. The hydro 100 was tested in 1974 at 104 HP. I used to be a parts manager at a Case-IH, and was quite sure 1066 Hydro's don't exist. The 1066 tests were run in 71 and 73, with the early 1066 only 116 HP, late 125 HP. Could be very possible the 100 Hydro was indeed a revamped 1066 with a Hydro in it as Hydro's do have pretty bad power loss. DOUG

I have seen a few 1066 hydros around. The local Case Ih dealer had one traded in just about a year ago. personally I wouldn't touch a hydro because they are known to cost a lot to fix and prone to failure. The gear drives are the way to go as far as durability.

Had a neighbor that had a 1066 hydro. Sold it at auction 20 years ago. Last I knew it was about 10 miles away still in use. They also did make 966 hydros, nearby airport had one with dual turf tires and a white factory cab. We have a 1026 and that transmission is pretty nice for some things but it eats alot of power and really hurts perfomance at the drawbar.

Don't tell my neighbor a mile down the road IH never made a 1066 hydro because he has one and it was bought new by them.
Another thing,I read with amusement people running down hydros that most likely never owned one.Our family owned 544,656 and a 186 all hydros and never put a dollar in any of them other than filters and oil.Mark

Didn't know that they made the 1066 and 966 hydros but I guess they do.

Didn't know they made an 856 gas until 3 days ago.

What's next I'm learning all the time?

Gary

IH made a lot of Hydro's they we're very proud of this innovative transmission. It was innovative in it's time. I think the following were made with hydro transmissions in addition to gear:

656 Hydro
666 Hydro ? not sure about this one

826 Hydro
1026 Hydro

966 Hydro
1066 Hydro

Hydro 70
Hydro 86
Hydro 100

Others

Hydro's were tremendous tractors for planting, hay (cutting bailing) and harvesting or anything that needed variable independant PTO and ground speeds. It's ability to creep was far superior to the optional creeper gears in todays tractors. HOWEVER it was terrible for tillage.

The drawbar HP was generally 30% less then the PTO HP versus gear that would only loose 10%.

Also, the transmission really didn't hold up under constant tillage.
