Today I cut,drilled and welded 7 ripper brackets onto a 6" I beam I had. The back is bent at 78" with 5" sides for reinforcement for the main sides. Still I ask??? when done how far should the cutting edge be below the sides?? I think I will weld a 3/8 x 2 skid plate on the sides, I have a 2x2x3/8 angle on the bottom of the back so all is level so??? cutting edge should be how far down?? thanks Don from up north.
 
That was interesting. You asked how far down the cutting edge should be as measured off the sides. I wandered out to the barn and looked at mine. It's about 3/4 to 1". It does have a pretty serious sweep forward as compared to the sides. Make it 7/8" or whatever it is in mm's and you should be fine.
The toplink adjusts the cutting depth. The more I crank the box blade up in the front of it, the less the front cutting edge cuts and the back edge really digs in when backing up.
The reverse is true, the more I crank the front of the box down, the more the front edge cuts and the back edge will be above the ground. That is, I can smooth with the back edge and not have it dig in.
If I make the front edge of the box down, the cutting edge really digs in.
 
How would you make it adjustable? That's what the top link is for. A lot of people use a hydraulic top link with a box blade. My cutting edge is about an inch lower than the sides. Dave
 
Slot the mounting holes for the cutting edge. Since he doesn't know what will work the best, that will give him adjustability to raise and lower the cutting edge verses the sides when he tries it out.
 
The cutting edge on mine is 1" below the sides. I don't think I would put skid plates on the sides as they won't allow the scraper to dig.
 
Thanks for the input. I think I will go with 1" as I am going to weld the edges on. I have some used edges from a highways underbelly. If it is too much I can just trim a 1/4 or so off.
