O.T. 2001 7.3 Diesel leaking coolant

PS experts needed--Our F350 is leaking coolant from what appears to be the water pump--just noticed it today. I did a search online and found a few posts about the stamped sheet metal t'stat housing being the likely culprit. Anyone have this happen? Why would Ford use steel for this application? (Not to mention what these trucks cost, too!) I was thinking it was the water pump tell-tale leaking but I won't get a chance to work on it 'til the weekend.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

"Why would Ford use steel for this application?"

FORD???

Just remember those engines are built by Navistar, the surviving remnant of the IH Corporation, which is so beloved on these Forums!

As to my one experience with this problem...on a neighbor's 7.3 the waterpump bearing worked it's way forward in the housing, pulling apart the shaft seal, causing it to leak.

Nope! Thats one of Fords add ons! The whole cooling system is all Ford. The one from IH for that year of engine is different. The only other one I know of being made for Fords is the billet one from dieselsite.com .

Look at the weephole from the bottom of the engine. IF its leaking youll see it there. If it is the housing, check out dieselsite.com for a billet replacement.

Hey, we love IH, no matter what year, or name for that matter. Coincidentally the one for the IH version isnt much better, but they do at least paint it with a rust resistant paint, inside and out. It only took Ford to mess this engine up!
