Toy tractor restorations

Anybody on here mess with this stuff? I have an original 1:16 scale IH backhoe I got when I was a kid. Mid 70's vintage, I think. I got it as a present late in my childhood and never played with it much, so its in pretty good shape. My nephew loves it, however. Problem is dad and I saw one like it at a show once, only it was in slightly rougher shape and the guy wanted 75 bucks for it. I've seen nice ones bring about 100 on ebay. Last week I bought a well used one just like it on ebay for 11 bucks, figured I'd try to fix'er up for the kids xmas gift. I need some parts and maybe some decals, anybody know where I could get some info? Thanks.

Toy Farmer magazine carries ads for the businesses that have those things. They have a website. You can call them and maybe get them to send you a recent edition to get ads. Time is short.

Tell me about it! I got a backup present in case things don't work out in time. The kid has a bday in early february. So one for xmas, and one later. Thanks Bill, I'll check them out.

The biggest parts supplier that Toy Farmer advertises is Dakota toys. They do have everything. Could go on the net and get a direct link to them. Also if you have a show coming in your area you might look there as sometime there is a parts dealer there.
Hope this helps.

I wish I still had my toy tractors and implements. Dad got them at the JD dealers in the late 40s early 50s. I had a tractor, disc, plow, wagon and manure spreader.

Remember the railroad logos that came in Sugar Crisp? My Uncle Charlie drove an engine for the C&O railroad. I saw some on ebay that went for close to $100.00 for a complete set.

Dakota toys as mentioned below for parts and decals. An important step in the process is to harden the paint by baking the tractor after the paint has dried. Otherwise the paint will stay soft and chip easily. I don't remember the temperature, but it wasn't too hot and it gave my moms oven a nice burnt-paint smell. Also remember not to bake the plastic parts, don't ask me how I know...

Egli (sp?) toy salvage out of Iowa has had every piece I have ever needed for my collection. I would say I have fixed up 6-8 whites and john deeres, ih's etc.

Yeah I thought about doing something like that. I considered putting hardener in the paint. Only problem is I would have to buy a quart of paint for a little toy tractor.

Thanks folks for asking and commenting on this thread.

I have a 1950s John Deere crawler that needs treads. Always enjoyed going to the Deere dealership to see what they had in that was new.
