Ferguson TractorTE20

Itried to pull the tractor to move it as I do not have it running yet. The problem is that as one wheel turns foward the other turns backward. Also I tied to crank the Engine (hand crank) and although the Trans. is in neutral it wont crank unless I depress the clutch. What am I doing wrong. I believe it to be a 1949 Ferguson.

Not exactly sure about these answers, but maybe they are right. If you are trying to pull start it you have to have it in high gear,or at the minimum 3rd gear or thats all it will do is turn one wheel forward and one backwards.Seems like a TO-20 you have to have the transmission in the S position to start it.That may or may not be why you have to depress the clutch.Maybe somebody that knows better than me will answer shortly.

If you live in a cold climate, water in the transmission oil could be froze solid not allowing the transmission gears and bevel gear to rotate. Rear wheels are turning through the differential, but bevel gear is stationary. Could also be a problem with the transmission output/pinion seized if not frozen.

Those answers sound right.Did I understand correctly that the engine will turn with the crank while the clutch is held in,if so it must be a transmission problem like the others said.

After thinking about this a while, maybe you should jack up the right rear wheel and see if it turns with the trans in nuetral. If it is stuck in 2 gears it wont turn and you dont want it to start without the clutch being depressed. If it spins without much effort then see if the pto is turning,if it is,kick that out of gear. Then while its still jacked up try and crank it.That way its not going to run over you if it fires maybe.Like others said it could be ice frozen in the transmission or differential.I could be wrong, but I think the S position for the gear shift was like a starter button, spring loaded, once its starts it just falls out of the S position. Its been a long time since I saw one of those tractors or started one.So if thats right it probably doesnt have anything to do with the not being able to crank it over.If you are cranking it with the pto in gear you would be trying to turn a lot of cold grease probably even if it doesnt have ice in it would make it hard to turn.

aleblanc, I have a 1948 TE20 that I am currently working on. Are you saying you can't move it, even with it out of gear?? (I can push mine around by hand with little effort on a hard surface, as long as it is out of gear.)

If you were trying to move it in neutral, and it won't move, the gears have to be stuck. Post on the Ferguson forum for further help.
