Track Toe Lug

Anyone have any info on Track Toe Lugs, U.S. Patent # 1,540,544. These replacement lugs were invented by Clayton Curtis in upstate NY and featured a lug in the shape of channel iron with a pivot in the center of the 'web' of the channel and were so designed that they pivoted and 2 full 'channels' were in contact with the ground on each wheel at all times increasing traction significantly.

Sounds a lot like the wheels manufactured by the Grid-Iron-Grip Co. in Rock Island, IL; they were manufactured as aftermarket accessories for many tractors during the steel wheel era.

Take a look at eBay #330205576458 to see an early ad (no, it's not mine and I have no commercial interest in it whatsoever!).

Since you have the patent no., I assume you've already taken a look at the info on-line (link is below); what else were you trying to find out?

The Grid Iron Grip is very similar. I have a sales sheet for the Track Toe Lug and it looks like the Grid Iron version predates the 1925 Track Toe patent by 6 years. I knew Clayton Curtis through his interest in Ireland Sawmills (Norwich, NY). I was looking to see if any of these Track Toes were out there or if the Ireland foundry might have produced them. This could be a nice addition to a commercial development exhibit the Chenango Co. Historical Society is developing.

Clayton L Curtiss started his camping trailer business in Norwich, NY, and later moved it to Classic ST. in Sherburne. My Father worked for him for several years building camping trailers, truckracks, toy ironing boards etc. Most of the machines in his shop were homemade by Clayt. He once showed me one of the tractoe lugs he had in his shop and told me that Henry Ford told him if he had started building it earlier he could have made him a rich man, but this was when rubber tires were just coming out. I purchased his welder and Planer when he was to old to use them any more. During Hurricane Hazel he and my father were up in the barn trying to keep the roof from blowing off, they suceeded. He died at about 96 yrs old and his wife died about 5 yrs later. He had a tough life, but was a self made man.
