Brother Dave said to put a gasket between the Idle air valve on my ranger, which i did and it stalled out as soon as it started, just like it was supposed to. Only probelm is my 94 ranger doesnt have an idle air valve since they started putting them in in 1996. Is my truck a 96 (i was just told its a 94) or did i misplace that gasket???

3.0L V6 1994 Ranger? Check out the link which shows an IAC....unless the engine is much older. If you have a VOM meter it tells how to test AND shows good pics. You can beat this thing, it isn"t that bad...yet;-)
IAC repair

Did you verify that the throttle is not stuck?
I've never had toruble with the IAC on my Ranger, but the older Ford's I had with a 302, and various others of that vintage, when they had IAC problems... would 'hunt'. Idle up and down, up and down and couldn't find a balance.
That's not to say that an IAC problem wouldn't do what yours is doing, but it's not what I'd look at first.

and BTW, the transmission is fixed. It was a $20 modulater valve-thanks for that advice too!!

Lanse, shouldnt there be holes in the gasket you put in to match the holes in your IAC. It looks like that gasket you put in would block the holes and make it not idle at all.
