O/T scrap prices

I just checked with the one and only scrap yard near me. Prepaired heavy iron is 30.00 a ton, tin, and long iron 20.00 a ton. I just paid 65.00 to exchange my acetelene bottle. With the oxygen being used, at 30.00 a ton I am ammost not making a thing. Then on the other hand I am getting the place cleaned up. I did buy a propane tip for my cutting torch. Has anyone used propane for cutting? Stan in Sunny Calif.

Yeah, propane works better than acetylene for cutting, and its sure a lot cheaper. Also works fine for brazing. They say you can't weld with it, but who uses a torch for welding anyhow? I don't even bother with acetylene anymore.

Stan, I have used propane for many years. It does not get quite as hot, as act, but always does me a good job. Can not weld with it, and a 20# bottle goes a long time around my place.

When I worked in the oilfield, the company had us use propane to do all our cutting and bending. I use acetylene for my torch work, because for me it's faster and you use less oxygen, especially when you're cutting anything over 1/2"thickness.

It's something how prices dropped so fast on metal. Cars were bring about $275 a ton a few months back. Now you're lucky to get$125/ ton for them

Stan,I have used propane for cutting, heating, & brazing for 20 years with excellent results. Takes a real long time to use up a 20# tank of propane, plus you always have a spare for the grill. Be sure to get hoses and tips made especially for propane.

Propane since 1971, and at that time the company added a extra $1.15 cartiage fee for acetelene. Ain't no way I would spend all that extra money at the time.

At that time my first oxygen tank was the very large $89.00 including the oxygen, within six months a small tank was $98.00 w/ out any oxygen. I can't remember the tank letters, but this was the basic three tank options at the time.

My neighbor went to propane a couple of years ago. It ended up he was using MORE propane/oxygen due to slower cutting and less heat. He ended up going back to acetylene. Likes it MUCH better.

A small 1 man part time scrap yard next to me only uses propane for all his cutting and uses the 100# bottles, he halls to the yard I put the ad on from.
