The Conserative Party of Canada just proposed to suspend the right to strike in order to help the economy. I think it's a great idea but apparantely the rest of the public doesn't. The CAW isn't willing to take cuts or help with the economic situation. It's all up to the government and all their fault. I commend the conserative government on their effort to help the economy but others seem to think their all wrong

Wife went shopping today I guess I'm helping out the economy.

PS sold one Xmas tree today. I think I'm still in the hole though.

I'm no fan of big unions, but the harper better be careful who he riles up... or he won't be there much longer.
I don't think there's much need of them doing what they're proposing. It will only excerbate the present problems...

He might still be around for a while if his proposal to cut back Gov't. subsidies to political parties goes through. He's proposing cutting abundant funding by 10 million! The liberals are already in serious financial trouble, among other things, so it may be hard to get elected if you can't afford an election campaign. The liberals are the only other party that could even have a chance at winning an election but they took a real beating in the one we just had. So bad that they need to choose a new leader. Harper is the lesser of the 2 evils. Dave

farmer boy: Never mind the politicians, they don't matter and the less they do, we're so much better off.

We the people are the champions of this latest so called economic crises. We've stopped buying, and corperate America is on the ropes. Since there is no referee, keep them there.

If we drive prices low enough, that also drives down government revenue, thus they will no longer have funds to dole out to their fat cat corperate buddies. HURRAY FOR THE PEOPLE, didn't think I was going to live long enough to see them once again take control of their lives.

In Michigan it is against the law for teachers to strike but they do it every year regardless and they don't pay a penalty for being lawless.

I'm more fearful of the other three fools forming a coalition... which is basically why I hope harper treads lightly or he'll be another footnote/joke like joe who.
I've got no problem with them cutting the election funding. They should never have had that to begin with, but riling up several hundred thousand in the federal civil service won't do them any good or save them any money... I think they'd be better off to deal hard in good faith rather than hit them over the head with a 20# maul.
I definitely agree that harper is the lesser of the evils here. Froggy scares the hell out of me.

Oh dear - what a storm Mr Harper has created. He has certainly put the other party on the run. I don"t think a coalition of the "3 wise men" would be very beneficial to this country.

I live 80 clicks west of Ottawa (Arnprior area)and of course we are bombarded by all the political smoke and mirrors. My wife works for the PS but doesn"t believe in striking so that doesn"t hurt us.

All I can say personally is,I'm glad my wife is in the profession that she is (she's a nurse) and glad that I stayed the course and stayed in the cattle business instead of selling them this spring and cash cropping. Cattle prices are down a little, but input costs are dropping like a stone. I heard $320 anhydrous at the gulf this morning. Wonder how the cash croppers who filled up at $1200 over the summer are feeling right now? I'm not gloating by any means. I know it's all cyclical and my hard times are coming back sure as they've been here before. Just that right now, things aren't looking so bad around the home place.

If the goverment stops funding the parties where do you think they are goning to get the money to run ads and pay the cost of running a election? You and I cant afford to donate millions but the big companies and the rich can, After they donate the parties will owe those rich guys. Who is gonna look after our needs? THINK ABOUT THAT.

Letting politicians mess with economics is a teriffically bad idea.

So - How would it help the economy by reducing working peoples' buying power?

Would it help even more to limit executive salaries to, say $125,000 per year?

How about limiting government employees' salaries to twice the US federal poverty level. That's all they really need, right?

How about limiting ag crop prices to a rolling average of the past five years, less the most recent year's price if some politician thinks they were unrealistically high?

Robert: Apparently you haven't figured out a route around Montreal, for you and your good better half to drive those two little Farmalls to Nova Scotia.

I've figured out how to bypass London via tractor. Thought I had Toronto figured out, now they've extended the urban area all the way to southern tip of Lake Simcoe.

Where do you think a lot of the money comes from right now the rich and the corporations have always been in control, that is why we are in this mess. Lets stop trying to put this on the backs of working people.

Haha Hugh!
Yes, you are correct, I have not been able to bypass Montreal, however I found a moving company in NS (Bluenose - how fitting!)that had a driver that I know so they managed to haul my tractors to "The Valley" for me. Wife and I made trip last summer with a load of machinery on my flatbed, she had her eyes closed (and mouth shut) from west island right through the tunnel! I like playing bumper cars with them guys, especially since I am bigger and trailer rails are at car side window height.
Last haul was in October, hauled a Farmall 666 from Dutton, Ontario to Middleton, NS. Tough haul as it has a cab and is not really aerodynamic! I didn't find a bypass for London or Toronto!

Robert

They're already doing the bidding of the corporations. Let the corporations fund them. There's ways around everything. It's just that the media hasn't quite caught up to how they're getting around the laws... that's all.

Rod

Well, farmer boy, I been thinking about this all weekend, listened to Rex Murphy's show this evening, and I think the combined opposition is going to take the government down.

Since Steven Harper only won his minority status because he was the least hated of the stupid, and since this is his second try, yet failing to get a majority. I think he should resign like Dion, leaving both Tory's and abundant's leaderless. From there the parliment should elect independant Bill Casey Prime Minister. Bill could then select his cabinet and would govern, without these damn non confidence motions, for one year. In that time both Tory's and Liberals will select new leaders.

I'm confident Bill will make some major changes, preventing parliment from ever getting in this perdicament again. He could start with fixed term elections, and abolish the non confidence motion.
