John Deere Snowmobile Parts

I don't have a JD sled, but I've always wondered. Where would a guy go for parts? I just went to the JD parts search website and all they had for the Trailfire was a battery. Any ideas?

Polaris sold what Deere snowmobile parts they had left to Parts Unlimited in the late 80"s. Dennis Kirk has some repro parts still listed, but Ebay is about your best source for NOS and used parts. There is a lot of stuff you are not going to be able to find.

While we're on the topic,so if JD actually sold it to Polaris, that means they actually built them themselves and not had someone build them for them?

I had a Spitfire and also a JDX8. Bearings, bogey wheels, etc. were all generic stuff once you got it apart and looked at the numbers.

I think the engine in the Spitfire was a Kohler and the JDX8 had a CCW (Canadian Curtis-Wright), which I believe there are still parts available for.

Probably should have kept them, but traded up to a newer Arctic Cat!

I didn't realize anybody screwed with snowmobiles anymore. I parted out my 2 Liqui-fire 440s 7 years ago. Parts were too expensive and snow too scarce. Haven't missed them even a little.

where are you located. here in WI we got a dedicated snowmobile junkyard. place called Benizers (spellin?) i would look to see if there is possibly a snowmobile junkyard around you or even in your state.

Yes , JD built them in the same factory as their lawn and garden stuff. The idea was to make use of the factory in the off season. However they found out that snowmobiles sell real good some years (when there is lots of snow) and poorly others. Also the technology was advancing very rapidly. I haven't snowmobiled in a few years but the speed, suspensions and brakes of the newer sleds are unbelievable. I'm sure many of the components were generic as others have mentioned.

i work at a john deere dealer in ohio and we still have a couple of parts left (very few)
first think that comes to mind is a track and a windsheild
but for the life of me can't tell you what they fit

thanks, often wondered that when I used to see them.I know what you mean about newer sleds.I don't smowmobile here either, but on the artic cat website there's local dealers with over 1000 cc machines retailing at almost 15 000 Canadian plus tax,and those toys are heavily taxed,so be over 18 000 out the door quite easily, now that's the most expencisive machine's available too.I remember the JD 440 Liquifire was the nicest machines around here in the late 70's/early 80's.

Anything more than a heavy frost around here and the snowmobiles will be out for a day or two. And once a decade they are actually useful.

You mention you work at a dealership that may still have some New Old Stock snowmobile parts. I was an Area Service Manager for John Deere Company Columbus...then later a Territory Manager calling on dealerships during the sled years. I am now retired to home farm in MI but I am very involved in restoration of JD sleds. I purchase remaining snowmobile related items in complete lots such as NOS snowmobile parts, service tools, parts & technical manuals etc. from dealerships. Please pass this on to your dealer manager.
