580 B case backhoe question.

A while back someone asked about the tractor not moving when cold.

Someone answered to check to see if the suction tube screen was plugged.

I can't find in the Archives.

Anyway mine is acting the same way. Where is this suction tube screen you were talking about?

Thanks

Gary,
I am going to guess it is not what you want to hear. In the rear trans case I'm guessing. Dad had a friend that went through a couple of the shuttle clutches on an old 580 of the 30 series hoods style.

I have a contractor friend that for years when the weather is below freezeing he raises a back wheel off the ground, puts the trans. in gear, and lets that wheel spin for 10 or 15 mins. or maby longer depending on how cold it is to warm the trans. before using it. Works for him. This is on a 580 Case TLB. Armand

I believe it was a 580B that I done the screen on once and it was awful. I'm sure it could have been easier had I removed a bunch of stuff.

Anyway there is a plate on top of the trans. just behind the engine that the charge pump is bolted to the underside of and in turn the suction pipe is connected to the pump. It is possible to lift that plate take the pipe loose and snake it out of there but it's tough.

When you get the pipe out you will see why they give trouble, the screen portion on the pipe is way small and they just get covered up with junk.

Yep thats what I have been doing. Lift and put it in gear for 5 minutes or so.

When it warms up it will push till the wheels spin but when its cold it will not move itself.

Sounds like I better wait till I'm done grubbing trees to tear into it.

I can't visualize the 580 but is there a way you can back flush it? Drain the fluid and then pour a gallon of some type of carb cleaner or other solvent. Maybe add some to the hose coming off the pump and then blow it through with compressed air? Repeat till clean?

I'm not sure that some carb cleaner would not hurt the oil if you didn't drain it. May help thin it. ATF would be compatible with hytran maybe. Don't know if it would clean the screen but guys here use it to unstick pistons, etc.

Guess we'll wait to see what any of the others think of this.

I have a 580B that has loaded trucks every workday for the last 15-20 years. I think tack quit around 6k hrs. It moves very slow when cold. We just go easy with it until it gets warmed up. Only thing we have had to do to it is put a ring and pinion in a few years ago. Loaded to many trucks.
