I haven't ran my 4020 for a few weeks & when I went to start it & didn"t even turn over. The battery"s are only 3yrs old. The connectors are dry & in great shape. Can I jump start it using my 3020? Would I need cables to each battery or just one? This has NEVER happened before...this tractor has been the most reliable starter of all my other tractors...including my gas ones. Help!Thx!

We need to know if the both the 3020 & 4020 are 24V,12V, early or side console, positive or negative chassis.
Do the head lights work but dim when attempting to start?
Do you have an ordinary 120V powered battery charger?

Pull the batteries out and charge them or if snycro range pull start it if you NEED it right away.

Your starter may be draining them.

The 4020D is a late 72. I didn't try the headlights but the 3 lights on the dash lite up with no problem. I have an ordinary 6/12v battery charger. the 3020 is a 1970.

The "should" both be 12V -chassis.
When there isn't even a grunt, snort or sizzle when trying to start the 4020. There maybe a problem that a boost won't solve.
There are a couple of switches to prevent starting if the tractor transmission is in gear.
Get back to use about what the headlights when when attempting to start.
If they dim it's a cable, battery, connection or starter problem.
If the lights stay bright, the problem is the keyswitch, wiring, safety switches, circuit breakers etc.

For what its worth, my 3020 is real bad about the connection on the back of the key switch not always making contact, may not do it for a year them 2 times a week, i just shake it a touch and off i go.I know it is in park right?

Well you don't have to,but it is best to pull them out and test them and see where they are at and charging them seperate is the best way to charge them up. This way you are also to clean the connections as you go.

Checked tried the lights...they work just fine & are not dim at all. I even tried to "wiggle" the key a little based on the other post. Still no luck.

Maybe mother deere came buy and installed a clutch safety switch on it when you weren't looking :)

If you don't even hear the solenoid click and the dash lights seem bright you probably have a short in the safety switch, ignition switch, or starter connections.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I figured it out based on all the input...got back up in the seat & saw the problem. My son stuck the shifter in 1st gear. It had me fooled & I looked right past it until I looked closer tonight. I thought it was a bit strange since I"ve never had any problems with this tractor ever starting. What a great bunch of guys! Thx again!!
