ethylene glycol versus proplyene glycol antifreeze

Hello all:

I had to go down to check on my bobcat tonight and added a gallon of ethlyene glycol and I think it had proplyene glycol in it. Thats all I had and feared of it freezing up so I added a little less than a gallon. Will the antifreeze gel up, what could happen? I"m a little nervous about it and wanted to know the side effects.

Don't know only that I think proplyene glycol is used to replace voids in wood. I think I would get it out as soon as possible.

I do not think there is danger, but they probably do not mix well in terms of additives etc. Too much antifreeze will get thick and stop cooling, 60 40 mix is about the maximum antifreeze to water mix. I would replace it with 50-50 mix of new. JimN

I guess my question is I don't know what was in it in the past (I'm assuming PG since that's what it calls for). I added 1 gallon. What do you think let it alone or change it? If you go to autozone how do I know what the difference is between EG and PG?

Thanks

The two are compatable, no antagonism occurs, you don't have any thing to worry about. We've been doing it for 6 years in our shop. At first they said not to mix them but they found no harm in doing so. You don't want to put them in any container or plumbing that may end up in drinking water.

John:

You're saying that mixing regular EG to PG will work without any detremental side effects to engine? The biggest thing between the two is whether it's environmentally friendly or not?

Thanks

Seems to me you need to find out why it was a gallon low on coolant. Then fix the problem. Inspect all hoses, thermostat operation, etc. Then flush. Then install antifreeze/distilled water at 50/50. Why are you worring about this temporary addition of the gallon you put in? Why not just fix it right? Tom

I don't think that was his question Tex. Cold weather coming, he has time to fix it later but a busted block isn't going to help. Just my 2Cents.

I'm not sure if DEx Cool is ethylen or propylene, but the reason for not mixing Dex with regular is you loose the extended life properties according to our bulk antifreeze supplier.

Tex:

It was a little low as I hadn't checked it it awhile. It needed coolant in it yesterday evening and that's all I had available and it sits outside. Either make an attempt to keep it from freezing or let it freeze, what would you do? Actually, as a used machine I don't exactly know what it had in it. Any antifreeze was better than none at the time.
