Ralph,

I don't collect watch fobs, but I have one that is invaluable to me. I inherited a pocket watch from my step-father upon his death in 1955. The watch had been his father's. It has a leather strap with a metal fob that has an image of an OLD tractor engraved on it. I only use the watch on special occasions. I believe it to be nearly 100 years old, and it still works well.

Do you have a collection?

Hi Ralph
I have a small collection of watch fobs. Mostly const fobs, with some truck and farm machinery fobs. Good hobby but is getting to expensive for this poor old boy.

I got started collecting fobs about 6 years ago, and wound up buying out several collections. I have about 200. Most of mine are Cat, cranes, and other construction equipment.

i have 25 or so mostly tractor, all the john deere crawler one's. i have one on ebay john deere 1 1/2 engine nobody can tell me anything about--as of right now it is one of a kind. ralph 1-541-472-9196

Ralph - Collecting is not really the word in my case... I have a box that my uncle gave me some time ago that must have 200 or so brand new watch fobs from when he worked for a Cat dealer in Ohio. Most are still in their original wax paper wrapper. Many friends have told me to e-bay them, but I just can't let go (personal problem). So they just sit... Maybe I'll hand them down to my son.

I was a young boy of about 10 years old. I found an old pocket watch in a drawer and my dad said I could keep it. I loved my watch. I was with my dad at Wade Richarson's barber shop in Coolville Ohio one day. While waiting for my dad to be finished, I sat in a chair and looked at my watch. A big burley construction worker came in. It turned out he was a dozer operator working on a huge dam project in my hometown on the Ohio river. He saw me and my watch. He asked if I had a fob for my watch. I told him I didn't which caused everyone to laugh as it was quite evident that I had no idea what a watch fob was. He went out to his truck and came back to the shop. He said, Here, this ought to go right nice with your new watch." He gave me a brand new fob for my watch. It was black leather and had the most beautiful pewter Cat dozer on it. I carried that watch till I was a senior in high school-Some lowlife stole it after football practice. I don't really have words to express how very proud I was of my watch fob. I am now 56. I often think back to that man and his simple act of kindness to me a 10 year old boy he didn't even know. I know I have more compassion and a softer heart because of this man. I know God has paid him many times over for what he did for me.

I have been to Coolville, Ohio many times in the early to mid 90's. The town still there? I knew a guy there named richard who built house trusses. I spent some time in Athens just up the road. You still live there?

I am not much of a collector, just like to have a nice property with fruits, vegetables, and some pastured beef. Got an old d14 to do most of my work.

My first fob too, came rather by accident. While looking through a box in 1965 I found a spanking new Hughes Tool Bit fob that looks like a little oil well drilling bit,,,it is gold,,on a thin strap and the points rotate.

Since then I have collected several hundred on various topics. No repos! They are truly interesting to look at and represent a now by-gone era in America when advertising went beyond news print, and the noise on television.

I have not bought any in the past five years, but have no intention of selling mine,,as they are still interesting to look at.

Ralph,

I wish I knew how to do so. My wife has a digital camera, but neither of us knows how to connect it to the computer to get pictures into it.

Someday I'll take the time to get smart.

My sister still lives in Reedsville, Ohio over on the bank of the Ohio River. Coolville is still there too-hasen't really changed. I went to Ohio U and then entered the Air Force. Now I live in Madison County Iowa and fly airplanes for a living. I get back the the hills of Ohio about once a year to visit. Greaat place to be raised-full of great memories.

I grew up in ohio as well, went to OU in the 90"s, and work out west building things that i cant talk about, but sure did enjoy SE ohio. Last time i was back in ohio, it seemed like there were a lot of jobs leaving. I try to do what i can to help the midwest because i think there are lots of good people there.
