OT; 2002 Monte Carlo shuts it's self off going down the road

Need some help with daughters car. 2002 plain jane Monte Carlo with a 3.4 engine runs fine and at road speed the motor cuts out, no spit and sputtering what so ever. She coasts to the side of the road and it restarts with no problems. It has done this about five times in the past two years. Tonight while coming home from college it did it again and about 15 seconds after the motor shutting down, she lost all electical power. She pulled over and it restarted and everything worked fine for the rest of the way home. TIA

Could be an electrical connection at the battery. I had VERY unusual stuff happening on my '96 Chevy Z71 4x4, and it was that. Had to replace the cable to get a proper connection. Greg

It's only going to get worse. Sounds like an ignition/starting relay or something to that effect. I was going to say crankshaft position sensor but that is NOT it if you lose other electrical power as well.

The problem could be incredibly simple as a loose or dirty battery connection. Electronic cars LOVE their electric juice.
Clean those first with a small wire brush / sandpaper and see what happens.

main computer may be failing .

My Grand Cherokee did that and It did start out as cutting out and would sputter then run good for the rest of the trip. At that time they worked on the door locks and burglar alarm ran fine for a month then it started to run like yours, just plain shut off , and would restart.

I will say between the two problems cost me about $650.00

i had a ford falcon (1969) that done the very same thing. running fine and all of a sudden the motor shut off. put tranny in neutral and re-start and go again. maybe 5 miles or 5,000 miles and it's pulled it's little trick again. i changed everything possible on electrical and had the entire electrical system checked at ford dealer (of course if it don't do it when it's in the shop, then automatically there is nothing wrong) no one ever found any problem that would cause it to suddenly die. finally got tired of that BS and sold the darn thing and bought a VW. don't even get me started on that POS.

Check ground wire from battery to body. Thats where comp. gets its ground. Fixed several vehicles by replacing wire or cleaning corrosion.

there's a hundred causes. Check for a live short in fuel injection prior to replacing ECM. My car had two fused inwhich if one was removed, half the injectors were disabled. It would run (be it poorly) if the shorted injector was disabled. It wouldn't run if not. You main problem is it's intermittent.

Merle,

That's nothing to mess with and I'd urge you to take that car into a good GM shop.

The problem can be caused by a number of different things and needs to be properly diagnosed and repaired before the girl ends up in a situation where she could be hurt.

We don't see many Chevy's here at work , but some of the Buicks will do weird things when the ignition switch goes bad.
Just checked locator and several of the local Chevy dealers have this part in stock so they must be causing some kinda problems ? 22670487 with a list price of $187.65 Pretty expensive to be guessing on ? Wonder if there is anyway to be sure ?

Intermittants are the worst !! Get under the hood with it running ,pull , tug,tap on every wire harness or electrical wire you see. Start at battery cables. Tap on ECU with screwdriver handle . Make sure car is warmed up good . I have replaced several ignition swithes on these .

All kinds of stuff can go wrong with a car but that's exactly what was happening to my wifes Jimmy a year ago= ignition switch.

I agree as it is nothing to mess with. My dealer has known about it for a while now and has no clue.
From what everyone has said I think I'll start by having them replace the ignition switch.
