Gearbox oil

Hello, I have a 1963 Fordson SuperDexta and it is in bad need of an oil change. Can anyone tell me what grade of oil i need to use in the gearbox? I live in Ireland so the wether is damp and cold the most of the time.

Thanks,
Niall

If it"s a standard gearbox without hydraulics sharing the oil........
GL-4 with the marine rating. It"s designed to be non agressive to copper based bushings. GL-4 marine is also designed to still lubricate and inhibit corrosion even if mixed with a small % of water.
Somebody will sooner or later suggest GL-1 but I have no idea why. GL-1 is little more than crude oil with the lumps strained out. For the same money may as well purchase something with some anti-wear additives.
If it"s trans/hydraulic fluid. Use TH rated for wet clutches. Some TH oil is not designed with wetch clutches, brakes etc. It will ruin the friction surfaces.
There should still be service manuals for that tactor which will supply this and other important data.

I get TRACTOR and MACHINERY magazine which is a
United Kingdom publication, and it"s full of
advertisements for parts for Super Majors and
other british tractors. Just ask a dealer, there
shold be one near you somplace!
(I know, if you ask they"ll want you to buy
from them, when a farm supply store is cheaper)
