just read an article about Ford installing a new design six cylinder engine in their pickups in 1941. it was a flathead with a few more cubic inch than the flathead v8.It had more torque than v8 and same hp. I think it is the same engine that was installed in 8n ford tractors using one of the conversion kits such as the Funk. A neighbor had one and had a lot of power it seemed.I know where one used to be parked.(not for sale).anyone have any experience with them, and how did the tractor hold up to the extra power???????????????????///

What six cylinder engine is the article claiming had more power than the eight in 1941? At that time, the 239 c.i. V-8 was rated 100 horse and the 226 c.i. six at 90. The bigger six didn't come out until 1948 and wasn't used in pickups.

Years later - Ford bored out the 226 six to make it a 254 cube engine (in 1948) and only used it in two-ton trucks and school buses.

I've got two 1950 pickups and both had the Mercury 255 c.i. V-8s. The horsepower and torque specs for the 255 V-8s and the 254 sixes are the same.

Uncle had flathead 6 in 46or47 Ford pick ups in his plumbing business. If they held up to that they were good. Brother bought a 49 Ford 6 new, gave good service, kept until he got a 55 Ford with OHV 6.

Book I have states the straight six cylinder Funk conversion was 95HP, V8 Funk conversion 8BA flathead Ford was 100HP

...........posted the other day, Ford produced a 221 CID V-8 in '41................Perhaps that's the one he's referring to?

No they built their own.Edsel Ford decided they needed a six cylinder and built it even tho Henry Ford was against building a six because of a problem with an early six he had built and vowed never to build another car with a six cylinder engine.

The flathead Ford six was produced from inception until 1952. In 1952, Ford introduced their own straight six with overhead valves. Good engine, but not high performance. Ford V-8 went to OHV in 1954. Curtis Turner was one of the hot drivers in the early days of NASCAR. He raced a flathead Ford 6 in one class of race. Ford engineers asked him what RPM he was turning. "About 5800". Ford; "Not possible. That engine experiences destructive harmonics at 4700 RPM". Turner: "Hell, we go past that engine speed so fast that it has no time to harmonica". Turner once rented a car, absolutely stock, and entered it in a race. Destroyed it.

Dad had 50 ford car with 6. Ran 35 in low and 75 in second. I was 10 years old and watching the speedometer climb. Car went to Fla 3 times. Swear he musta been a moonshiner. Drove from Detroit to South Carolina seems like 10-11 hours back when the roads were not always there.
