OT: Last Load OF Leaves For 2008

This is the last load of this year's leaves. With the heavy rain and wind over the weekend it
cleaned the trees of the last leaves. Some were composted into the garden. The town vacuum's them up and they will be composted at a nearby landfill. I hauled 3 large garbage cans of compost in my old Cougar in Sept. and this was free. I made 11 trips. Each can weighed around 100 pounds. Hal
PS: If you have a pickup truck cost is $10.00. I spent more than that on gas. They have those big Cat loaders and they give you nice big load.

Local twonship around here has a compost and mulch day. Feels good to have the front loader dump 3 to 4 scoops of wood chips into the truck bed as you watch the suburban wives haul a little can load into the Prius.

I like my truck.
 
Should have kept my Chevy truck. It had been a diesel, but the owner was mad at it for being in the shop so much. He had a shop to convert it to a gas engine. They put a 350 Olds engine in it and then the owner didn't want it. I never knew why.

I went to look at it and took it for drive. I told the shop I would take it if they would safety inspect the truck. It only had 40 k miles on it and he said he would knock off $100.00
if I had it inspected. Cost $30.00 to inspect and they found no defects. The truck was a Scottsdale with dual fuel tanks. I hauled a lot of firewood with it. Hal
 
One problem I'm aware of with getting free compost like that is, you might get some black walnut residue that really puts the hurt on a lot of plants. One small town in our area uses a tractor pulling a blower and a silage wagon to pick up leaves. Our bigger town uses street sweepers that aren't nearly as efficient as far as hauling capacity.
 
i cannot even imagine why people fool around raking leaves and hauling them away i have a riding mower with mulching blades . its one of the cheap ones you buy from lowes a john deere 100 sells for 1500.00 bucks new you run over a large pile of leaves with this thing maybe 2 0r 3 times and they are reduced to almost nothing.
 
I lived in the city after I graduated school. Lived in a subdivision house and everything. I can say that there are some things about that life that are certainly nice but one thing that is not is the leaves. No burnpile, no field, no tractor and trailer.

The first fall I was in the house I figured I would do the standard practice of bagging the leaves and piling them on the street like all of my neighbors. I was trying to fit in. Trying to pack leaves in a flimsy plastic bag is one of the most frustrating things that I have ever done. I'm glad that you can just dump them on the street!! Honestly I'm happy for you!! I have so many black Walnut trees in my yard I am probally the providing that plant debres.

But seriously compoasted Blackwalnut leaves are fine.

"Walnut leaves can be composted because the toxin breaks down when exposed to air, water and bacteria. The toxic effect can be degraded in two to four weeks."

I planted barley for a cover crop on the garden and it was up in a few days. I talked to several customers that were getting the compost and ask them if they had been using it often and whether they had any problems. They said no problems at all. My tomatoes may even bigger in 2009. It was 24 here this morning in MD. Hal
