Water pump ?

I bought a new water pump last year for the house and now it is {on start up ] -- continuously clicking the pressure switch. I didn't replace the tank I was just wondering if this is what a waterlogged system acts like ? The tank is in a bad place to try to drain. but I will, by bucket if I have to.

From what I remember of a waterlogged system, If the bladder in the tank has no air pressure in it, the pump would cycle off and on all the time. you might have to drain some of the tank and pressurize thew bladder

Have You checked the check valve? Maybe, its letting the water by-pass causing low water pressure.. Just a thought... Larry

There should be a Schrader valve for adding air somewhere on the pressure tank. No need to drain the tank, simply shut off power to the pump, open a faucet somewhere in the house, and then add air to the tank. The air going into the tank will force water out through that open faucet.

Just went throuth something like this Sunday. Does it pump up to pressure stop then the pressure drops again until the pump restarts? Even without water being run in the house? If you close the valve at the inflow to the house does the pressure stay up until water is used? If so replace the check valve/foot valve.

With mine I had shut off the valve on the inflow pipe while cleaning the pressure switch hole in the pump body (it gets clogged with mineral deposits) The Valve knocked some crud loose which promptly got stuck in the check valve holding it open. Pump came on pumped to pressure turden itself off. Water ran back from tank to inflow pipe pressure dropped until pump came on again. IT would just sit there and cycle on, up to pressure, off pressure drops, on up to pressure and so on.

Check the air pressure in the tank at the valve. The correct amount should be 2 psi less than your low pressure setting on the pressure switch. In other words if you have a 30/50 psi switch the bladder pressure should be 28 lbs.Or if you have a 20/40 psi switch the bladder pressure should be set at 18 lbs.You can check the bladder pressure with an automotive type tire guage. Before checking or adding air pressure, disconnect power to the pump and open a water spigot close to the tank. You can now check the pressure in the bladder.Add air as needed. If that solves the problem the bladder in the tank is probaly bad.The pressure info on the pressure switch is located on the bottom of the top cover.

Does your tank have a bladder? If it doesn't, I would replace the existing tank with one that does. It will solve your warer logging problem.
Sometimes you can tell where the water level is from the condensation on the tank. Hal

Thanks Guys !

Through your prodding my mind, I remember that I had a friend helping me to put in this pump.

We was having problems with it then too.

I saw on the tank that the bladder called for 30# pressure and I had to add air then.

It wouldn't work right so My friend "played" with the pressure switch adjustment.

From your answers I re adjusted the pressure switch , Lowered the pressure in the bladder. and is now working fine.

I am happier than a newborn calf in the spring.

Thanks to you , I owe you a beer.
