4040 powershift, park position hard to get in place

I just bought a 1981 John Deere 4040 cab traqctor with powershift. Really clean, strong tractor with fresh major overhaul. anyway, powershift works great but hard to pull shift lever to park position most of time, sometimes, it just slides right in. has anyone dealt with this problem? is it in the upper linkage itself? any feedback is appreciated.

your shift cable is binding. They get dry inside the housing. People try to lube them, nut it usually doesn't work.. Probably will need to replace it.

thanks for the reply within 5 minutes, question... it shifts very smooth, but when pulled down to the last inch is where it gets hard. all gears shift at marked locations so I don't think it's an adjustment problem. I will check the cable as you mentioned.. thanks again.. Mike

no difference there. it's like when you come down towards park, you get to the neutral position. tractor will roll at that point, then I have to pull hard as it feels like I am setting a hard emergency brake. is there a adjustment on the park section that determins how hard it is to set?
