Is it true that crops are green and tractors are red?

I saw a poll which showed most farmers growing up didn't use green tractors but red ones.
Are the green tractors now so popular because a working farmer didn't have one back in the day, and now he wants one?

Green was the color choice for most of the farmers My dad knew, because breakdowns were low, they were good on fuel they were easy to maintain. But as my dad got older(he's 80 now)he liked the rumble of his W6 while plowing. He bought an H 8 years ago, and loves to mow the fields with it "listen to that purr!"
Me? To me, I can never get enough of that 2 cyl bark when plowing, or mowing at a fast clip!

I'll tell you something that Deere has been better at than engineering and building tractors and equipment. Merchandising, selling their name, getting it out there. You're right, there weren't that many 2 cylinders out there. Oilver,Ford,Allis,Case,IH far outnumbered Deere around here. But walk in to most any store in any city, you can buy something with the Deere logo on it. They've made a better name for themselves with the logo than they have with quality products. Guess it just says "country" to city folks.

That seems like a pretty odd assertion. In their day, IH typically led the way in sales, so maybe they had a preponderance (When's the last time ya saw that word on a tractor board?) of tractors in the field. But there were more than one shade of green, another shade or two of red, and a lot of orange, gray, blue and yaller tractors out there, too.

rrlund makes a good point down below. The green company I assume your are referring made and still makes some very fine tractors, but also has done an excellent job of putting their colors and labels on tractors made by all kinds of folks these days -- they excel at marketing, which was, in large part, the weak spot that was the undoing of the company I assume you refer to with the red tractors. If they had simply given farmers the option of buying a 3-point OR a Fast Hitch for their tractors, and licensed out the production of Fast Hitches and the implements for them to other companies, they might actually have overcome some of their other difficulties and still be around.

In my area there still aren't very many green tractors. Red, blue and a few orange all outnumber green. I wouldn't turn down a new JD but they would have to be cheaper than any of the others. Unless resale is an issue there is no advantage IMO. I know af one farmer here that bought 2 JD 70HP tractors and they stayed in the shop. He had always been a green guy but got fed up and bought 2 Kubotas. I'm not loyal to any 1 brand but use CaseIH and fordNH mostly.

You are dead on with that. It's all in the marketing and Deere seems to have the magic touch in that area. Back in the fifties and earlier Deere wasn't nearly as dominant as it is now. There were a lot of Deeres around but the name wasn't nearly as common then as it is now. Jim

Back "in the day" the market share was split across JD, IH, Farmall, McCormic, Case, Alice Chalmers, Oliver, Cockshutt, White, Massey.
Now it"s only three or four players in the medium to large tractors.
When Deere introduced the 20 series, eg the 4020. It was the being of the end of IH"s dominance in the market.

just as many blue tractors around here as the green one. we talkin new or course. dont see many old deeres round here but cant count the fords there so many of them. old masseys too.

One time I was going to make a graphic showing the history of North American tractor companies (buyouts/mergers/etc). By the time I got to the 90's I realized how hard it would be to visualize.

But there are actually 7 companies that I know of who offer 100HP+ ag tractors in the US.

Deere
CHN
AgCo
Kubota
Deutz-Fahr
Belarus
Foton

I didn't count Caterpillar since they don't make one with wheels :)
