update on Ford Engine

I went and looked it over today and it is a hard knock real loud when starting then it gets quiet unless throttle is pressed kinda sounds like crank is broken but the ones I have dealt with were loud when idle and quiet when in gear if the timing tensioner can make this loud solid noise please let me know I think we are in for a engine pull. Oh it is also kinda hard to start and has shut down while driving if this helps

Well one thing that would help is what motor is it?Then you can take a broomstick,a metal rod,a stethoscope, and while its running put whatever you end up using to different places on the motor, the other end to your ear,and maybe you can find where its louder at.If the noise is coming from the top of the motor, its probably the timing tensioner or something,if its coming from the oil pan area its a broken crank or rod maybe.

I don't remember what engine you are working on, but we've had problems with vibrations from bad flex plates or harmonic balancers, causing the cam sensor not to work right. That could be causing your running problems.

I don't think it would run very good with a broken crankshaft. Its probably the flex plate as Rust suggested. Ford a lot of those to fail.
