OT (Kinda)--Dave2: Crisis In Germany??

Der Spiegel (international online) had a piece dated 11-4 on economic conditions seriously declining there, the global slowdown killing German exports (spiegel.de/international/business).
If you haven"t seen it, could you check it and give us your take on what it seems like there from your perspective, whether it seems accurate or not??

I'm sure there's a crisis of some sort somewhere, but you don't notice it in the area I am. New houses going up, fuel going down, etc. Couple of places went belly up, but they were overextended to begin with. The German equivelant to (I think) the iron workers union just had a strike whining for an 8% raise to their already overinflated salary and benefit package. Local folks seem to be happy and have plenty of work. Sawmill in town, owner/operator also builds houses, barns, roofs, etc has a pretty good size crew and there isn't enough hours in the day or days in the week to get caught up in time for the Christmas break. Sure there's some belt tightening going on, but I don't know how bad it is.

Dave: Many thxx for on-the-ground reply. Sounds a lot like here: more noticeable in city and ex-housing-boom areas than rural areas. So far, so good.

(quoted from post at 16:15:42 11/10/08) Dave what do you do? How did you end up in
Germany?

Came over as a Soldier in 1990, got out a couple of years later and been here since working for the Army. Started raising Quarter Horses about 8 years ago, so shovel a lot of SH in my off time.

Southeast Ohio. Been away longer than I was there, but that's home. I was stationed at Ft Leonard Wood, Mo for 2 and a half years before I came here. Lived in Dixon for a little while, then moved to the boonies close to Newburg.
