painting sheet metal in this weather

Tried to get my hood/fueltank sheet metal prep'ed and painted before it got cold but didn't make it. I'm trying to do the prep work and will likely have someone else shoot the paint. I don't have a heated garage/shop to paint in. Any suggestions? Keep the part and primer warm, go out and paint it and bring it back in????

Its not a show tractor and will likely go into the woods and get scratched but it was very rusty and if I didn't paint it now it would never get done.

I have painted with rattle cans of Rustoleum down to 40 deg with good results. Rustoleum even has a rattle can clearcoat now. And most of the tractor colors available.
It is enamel and a bit tender for a while, but by spring it will be tough stuff.

Rig up some heat lamps to warm up the sheetmetal before you paint it, move 'em out of your way while you paint, and then move 'em back in to dry and cure the fresh paint.

Paint likes to run when sprayed on cold metal whether sprayed with a gun or spray can.

I'd do the heat lamp bit or farm it out.

This is a very long but very enlightening thread about painting with a roller. Guy says he painted in almost freezing temps, and the pics look pretty darn good.

Pay attention to the posts from "69chargeryeehaa".

Good Luck,

I like the heat lamp idea...
I've been known to warm bare metal with a torch when it's small parts.... Had people scoff at me doing such a thing too, but the paint stays on. Done that in the dead of winter with a 30 mph blow on. Get it hot, but not hot enough to boil the paint...

It's hazardous to a paint job to cool it, heat it,cool it etc. Especially with unvented heat. Condensation rusts and can be unnoticed. It'dd be better to do everything heated or unheated.
