Farmall M smoking!

Hey gang...
I just bought a 47 M from a fella in Indiana....I bought it with an engine problem....it smoked a little after it got warm...he said it had been sitting in a barn for quite some time and he didnt know anything of its past.

We have it running good now but still sputtering a little on one cylinder and still smoking blue/white smoke.....I'm thinking she has a stuck ring on one cylinder. I'll compression test it tomorrow.
What do you guys think?.....keep pouring witches brew too it and see if she frees up the rings or bite the bullet and rebuild.....I really need the tractor running thru firewood season and I was gonna rebuild it this winter.

I have had very good luck with ATF in the cylinders and letting it sit a few days. Have an Oliver 60 engine that had almost no compression till I fill the cylinder with ATF and then after about a week had numbers of over 100psi in all cylinders

If you have the time do as Old indicates, he has had Many success stories (too numerous to detail) using atf. If not, run it as needed, it will not hurt it to smoke a bit. JimN

Detergent or non-detergent oil?

rebuild..... well, if it just tuurns out to be stuck rings and you are sharp enough/clever enough/lucky enough to get them freed off without breaking them, put them back EXACTLY in the same place (ring gaps) as you removed them if they are still serviceable and bolt her back up. Remember they will be worn to the shape of the bore and turning them round may be bad news...

Non detergent oils were bad for gumming and varnishing rings. Rings can often be freed by soaking in a solvent plus heating and cooling cycles, without the need for prising them off with a screwdriver!! Some will pop free easily, some may need a couple hundred Celsius, or more.

If they are worn beyond service limits you will need to consider the bore wear (size and shape) to decide the best way to proceed.

Also remember if it has been stood for a long time, the exhaust valve(s) that was(were) left open may well be corroded and not seating properly.

love atf, before you pull it apart, try a quick fix that might loosen sticky valve

get engine good and warmed up, have engine turning over pretty fast, squirt maybe 1/2 cup of atf into carb air stream using pump oiling can

oh yeah, do it outside in strong wind, smoke will get rid of all mosquitos in the county

O.K.,
I took the tractor out on the road for the first time this morning...still smoking.....cranked it up in fourth and let her run a while.....then I shifted too fifth and got surprised at how fast these old M's are!!!! Blew my hat right off my head....but it also quit smoking within about 20 seconds and started running better...now its not smoking at all except when I throttle it up from an idle!

She's all serviced up and I'm taking it on a road trip of about 6 miles tomorrow and then we're gonna pull some logs with it...maybe that will finish limbering things up!!!!

Thanks all!!!!!!
