Hey folks,
I'm considering removing the sickle mower from my tractor and have a couple of questions.
1) Can the gearbox (??) that runs the mower be used for anything else that would warrant leaving it mounted, or should I just go ahead and pull it also?

2)My tractor is a 3 cyl diesel about the size of an 8N with 26 HP. How much drum mower could I handle? Those things are all over ebay for cheap and every one of my neighbors has one (just need to know what size to look for). Other part of this ?? would be: is a drum mower dummy proof to use and do they do a good job and how much maintenance is involved?

Thanks for any input,

Dave

Dave2- I doubt that the gearbox will do anything but weigh you down, remove it. You say you have a 26 hp diesel, how much does it weigh? I have a feeling it is to light in both horsepower and physical weight to handle the smallest 3 point hitch drum mower. Give a shout out to the HayDr over in the implement section, if there's a drum mower that'll fit your situation, he'll know, he sells 'em.

Thanks. I don't know the weight off the top of my head, but it's a chunk. The mowers don't look that heavy, but maybe that's about like 'she didn't Look 16......".
Just that my one and only experience with the sickle mower wasn't a good one and I thought the drum mowers would make more since. Quite a bit of free grass/hay for the taking here, just want to be able to take advantage of it.

Hi, I have had two Drum mowers and they both worked very well but they were both very heavy to pick up. The first was a two drum unit that we mounted on a DB 885 and it handled it well. The second was a three drum unit that I had on a DB Case 1490. It really made that case lean over. The two drum was a Fahr, and I believe that the Reese unit is quite a bit lighter. but I would still try one before I bought it because of the weight but also the power needed to get it started. Good Luck!

(quoted from post at 05:50:42 11/06/08) Dumb question. What is a "drum" mower?

not a real good pic.

A two drum 4 foot swath would be all it can handle. But you can go as fast as you can with it -5-6 mph.

We also ran a couple of two drum 3pt mowers, a Fahr and a Krone, before switching to a Claas three drum trailed. We had 60 – 70 hp on the front of the two drums. These required quite a bit of HP, especially on initial start up. While you could get away with less, I think 26hp may not be enough, unless you can find a lighter duty model.
