I have a 4440 with around 7k hours. Turns over extremely slow and not for very long. When cold-won't turn hardly at all and then doesn't start unless I use 200 amp charger. I assumed it was batteries and bought two new from JD-big mistake as should've just bought interstate or something. Anyway, that didn't really help the problem. It is set up with 2 12 volt batteries. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Maybe the battery cable strands are broken internally and not allowing sufficient current to pass to the starter. Is the grounding connection attached to the engine block & not a rusty bolt? Cable ends & all connections have to be shiny clean. Are the switch & solenoid in good shape?
Electrons like a non-resistive path to follow so check it out.

If the batteries are new and cables all good and heavy enough, it sounds like the starter could be poling, where the bushes are worn and the armiture earths out to the field windings. Does it get really hot? Be worth checking out. Make sure the cables are staying cool too.
All the best,
Rex

How is Deere at fault because you purchased their batteries and your tractor won't start?
What is the voltage measured between the starter motor case and the brass bolt on the solenoid while cranking?
I agree with the others the problems is high resistance connections and/or a worn out starter motor. It is 25+ years old.....

I think he's implying he bought the battery's from JD but there's no difference between them and the cheaper battery's except for price.

john deere batteries are a good quality battery, remove check and clean the battery terminals, and the cable ends, i had a 4450 that would not start, and after i cleaned the battery cables, it started, if that still does not work, remove the starter and take it in and have it tested.

right after you try starting it, run your hand down the battery cables, looking for warm spots. if you find heat, you found a bad connection or cable. you might check the ground connections first.

Had the same problem .Bought a 4240 with 2 12v batteries . Went back to the 2 6v batteries that were suppossed to be in . Problem fixed.

Are any of your battery cables the "pass through" type. The one where the cable goes from one point to another with just a tee off to the terminal it passes by. Those lead terminals can be bad inside and not show any trouble on the outside. It did on my JD 6600 combine. Would not start, only play the radio and lights.
