John Deere 310C Reverser transmission Problems

My JD 310C was slow about going into forward but went into revesre fine. I checked the fluid level in the reverser and it was a bit low. I noticed a slight leak from a Tee coming out of the side and it has a wire coming out one end and I think the hose goes up fron to a cooler. I rotated the Tee one more revolution to stop the drip and drained the oil out and replaced to proper level. It ran fine for two hours and then quit moving all together. I started it the next day and it moved fine. I then ran it for another two wours and it quit moving again. I rolled the front bucket back and moved the tractor back some and it started moving again. I had to do this a couple more times to get it back to the shop. I think if I were to go start it now it would probably move for a while. It has always lost speed when I had it in road gear and going up a hill to where I didn't use the road gear much. Can anyone help? It is a 1989 Model 310C backhoe. It doesn't have front wheel assist.

Hello Jim,
I think I know what your problem is. I think there is a button on your bucket control lever in the cab to cut out the drive. if the wire is shorting in the handle when you roll the bucket it moves the wire.you can check this by un pluging the soleniod wire down on the side of the trans. if your oil was clean then I don't think you have big trans problems. those reversers where bullet proof.

Those transmissions were notorious for filter plugging..They've got this full sized backhoe/loader with this little puney , pint sized reverser filter..If it hasn't been changed , try that first...It's inside that cast aluminum filter can , no bigger than your fist..

While edpap has a good suggestion I feel the forward clutch piston seals have worn out allowing the oil to escape the fwd clutch cylinder the cold oil will keep a seal till it thins out. You could as edpap suggested, unplug the clutch disconnect solenoid and try it. This is the same reverser that all the case hoes used from the 580c through the early 580k"s and I have rebuilt more of them than I care to think about. They are a very good unit but can be worn out like anything else. I used Case kits in two JD"s that I did over. Case sells clutch and seal kits, Case uses brass reverse clutch plates while JD uses fibre discs but the brass went in and worked fine. Pumps are the same, went with a JD converter at more than twice the price.

Thanks for the info. I have been gone on vacation and haven"t had the time to get into it yet. I will hopefully have time over the Thanksgiving holiday. Sorry it took so long to thank you.

I am having the same problem with my machine not going in forward or reverse. I replaced the seals and clutch plates and it ran fine for about 10 minutes and then quit moving again. Any suggestions?
