Air Drying Corn

I have probably asked this before, but just want to make sure I understand it. When you put corn in a bin and just run air to dry it, do you leave the fan run till it is dry enough? What if it rains for a day or two. Leave the fans run? I understand that you need to keep air moving, but won't the moisture in the air put moisture back into the corn? Thanks, Chris

Yes, running that fan on a rainy day or on a day with high humidity will put moisture into the corn. If the corn in the bin is already high in moisture, running the fan anyhow might prevent the corn from heating up and being damaged. It kind of all depends on how much moisture is in the corn to start with.

Chris: Do you have a stir-all in the bin? We dumped some 20+% moisture in our bin and as we got into the field it got dryer. In my little bin we would put 20-22% in and run the fan 24-7 till it got cold. I don't have a stir-all. The corn on the bottom will get plenty dry. J.

Hi, John. The bin is 21', and has a circ-u-flow unit in it. It can take the corn off the bottom and spread it back on top, or if set up with auger, it can transfer dry corn to another bin. I'm not set up to transfer, so I just run it to move wetter corn to the bottom. Not planning to put very much in till corn in bin is down to 16 or 17%, then will add some more. Chris

We had not used any gas in four years, just air. As long as you have a stirator and keep the air on, electric is cheaper than gas.

On the other hand, the wear on the fan and stirator needs to be costed into the corn...
