Just for interesting comparisons.
Corn this past year was 20,000 aproxx, dry land lighter soil, will increase to 25,000 in "09 with 85 -95 day maturity.

Soybeans- "08>120,000 on 12" rows. Will increase to 140,000 in "09 with a taller variety with a .6 maturity.

Corn for Silage this year ended up being about 20,000/acrefor the early planted corn, and then once we figured out it wasn't set quite as high as we were shooting for, we bumped it up to 30,000 if I remember right. Gonna keep it set at atleast that next year, unless we decide to bump it up to about 35,000 or more.

The funny part is, the old seed from 2 years ago grew better than some of the new seed from this year. The late planting turned out really nice, it just didn't have enough time to fully mature before the frost got it.

I'm quite a way south of you in central IL and we are on very productive non irrigated ground. The corn is planted at mostly at 34,300 with some at 35,600 and one field at 40,000 all in 30" rows. I pick out varieties from 104 day to 115 day to try to get started early and not end up with alot field loss in dry corn when we finish.
The soybeans are planted at 145,000 in 30 inch rows. We have planted varieties ranging from 2.7 to 3.9 and this year they were either 3.1 or 3.4. We just havent seen any yield bump for planting anything past a 3.4 and untill we do we wont be planting anything later than that. Those 3.6 thru 3.9 beans can be some pretty tough cutting.
