I just got my dell desktop back from the repair shop after spending 200 bucks and it still doesn't work.I get a white page that says the web page cannot be found. The email works, but can't get any web sites. The computer shop said they couldn't check it out because i'm still on dial up and the number in the computer won't work with there phone system. They say they will come to my house, but that's another 50 bucks. They already replaced the modem and a cd drive. This dell has cost me over 400 bucks since new to keep working. Is there anything i can check?

I know nothing but I would go to start, control panel, network connections click on create a new connection. I assume you have XP. See what happens.

Start with the basics. I assume that at this point you have your dialup connection running. Once you have your dialup connection started, bring up a command window. One way to do this is to pick Start->Run... and type "cmd" in Run dialog. Then enter the following commands in the command window.

ipconfig

This command should list the IP address that you've been assigned. If it doesn't list an IP address for your dialup connection, then there's something wrong with your dialup. Get that fixed. Otherwise, try the next command.

ipconfig /renew

This should come back quickly with the same information as before. If not, then there's still a problem with dialup. If this command works, then try the following command:

nslookup ytmag.com

This should give you the IP address for ytmag, which for me is 67.132.201.2 (It might be different for you.). If you don't get a good answer, then the problem is probably your ISP. You need to call them up and explain that you have a DNS problem.

Now all this assumes that you have a more-or-less direct connection to the internet with no firewalls or proxies between. If not, then the IE settings come into play. Without knowing how you're actually connected, it's hard to say much more.

You say email works - how are you accessing it? AOL?

Any kind of add-on firewall software running that you can temporarily turn off? Have you tried booting into safe mode and making a connection to see if something being loaded during bootup is interfering? (spyware, background programs)

If your connection is allowing email traffic, I wonder if maybe your Internet Explorer is corrupted and a reinstall is in order? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

Sounds like it's still set to go out the proxy from the repair shop.

On IE 7, it's Tools -- Internet Options -- Connections -- LAN Settings. If a proxy is checked on, uncheck and life should be fine.

If you still need help you might try newbies.ws, they are good and another one is http://forums.techguy.org/ both sites can help with most computer problems.

How did you get YT to display and post this message?
