wico c,no spark.all new parts??

i have a 37 jd a,with a wico c mag, when i got it it had no spark,i cleaned the points, check gap.still no spark.i bought a new coil, points, cond, caps, rotor.all new,put it back together still no spark,i never took the whole mag off yet.could it be bad ground??im stumped?

Yes, it could be grounded. Is there a grounding lug on the case with a wire going to it? It could also be the magnets if they've gotten weak. they will do that if the tractor has sat for a good while. rw

Check the magnets with a small screwdriver, they should attract it strongly. Also is your impulse working good. You should hear a loud snap as you crank the tractor. Maybe ry cleaning the points by sliding a dollar bill between them a few times. Even new points can become oxidized if they sit for a long time. For an extra good job, use a $5 bill. Just kidding of course, there is something in the makeup of our paper money that cleans points very well if they are not burned.
Good luck,
Paul

the magnet seems strong, because theres one that going through the coil sticks good, ill try cleaning the points,it has new wires and plug too.thank you guys...

Just another thought, check the shaft for play side to side. You could have a worn bushing allowing it to move around and not open points correctly. Sometimes they get bad enought to actually allow the magnet to touch the laminations of the coil.

Jason, at slow cranking the mags never gonna fire UNLESS the mags spring wind n trip impulse assembly is working. If you rotate the mags drive cup assembly the correct direction in which it normaly turns (or if its on tractor correct and is turning as it should as flywheel is turned), each 180 degress there should be a loud distinct sharp IS YOURS DOING THAT?????????????? If not post back for tips regarding that......

If the impulse is working but still no spark theres a couple issues (among 50 other things lol) on those C Mags that could come into play. One is the lil grounding tabs on the back of the mags points/condensor mount plate need to make good electrical contact and some new wico C points spring tabs can ground out against the mount post. An ohmmeter or continuity tester can be used to easily insure good points grounding and corresponding opening as the points open and close. To be safe in the meantime be sure they are clean and gapped correct and indeed open and close as they should.

Its possible even new condensors are bad if you still have an old one try that maybe along with the points being clean n oil/residue free and that the points and condensor wiring and the coil is wired correct. Theres usually 2 lil grounding wires from the coil, one for primary one for secondary and they atatch n wire under a mount clip.

Thers a ton of things that could be said abut that mag I give 90 min seminars about them at JD shows but we cant cover it all here, just start with points and wiring and grounding issues abd if shes snapping or not for now and we can go from there. Theres also the potential cap and rotor problems if all else fails.

I would do as Paul suggested is to check the magnets for magnetism. I have Wico from a twin cylinder garden tractor and the magnets are dead. Hal

Make sure the points and condenser are grounded. Two little copper tabs that need to be clean on back side of breaker plate in large square cover and if those are broke off or bent in not making contact you won't have any fire.
