WE HAVE JUST PURCHASED AN 8640 WITH A CUMMINS REPOWER. THE PTO WILL START TO RUN THEN QUIT. IT LOOKS LIKE THE PTO WAS NEVER USED. STILL HAD PAINT ON THE SHAFT. ANY SUGJESTIONS? ANYTHING THAT CAN BE CHECKED OR ADJUSTED?

I have an 8240. The PTO on this tractor is controlled by a relay in a fuse box on the right side of the control console. this relay has to have the engine running in order to close and if the control circuit loses power this relay will open. So you could look for a loose connection at this relay or a bad relay. mine is also susceptible to high temp. problems but this should not be a problem this time of year. Also check your model no.I can find no reference to an 8640.

the tractor you are talking about is completely different that the 8640 big 4 wheeler built about 25 years ago.

IT STAYS FORWARD. IT ACTS LIKE IT IS ENGAGING BUT IF YOU PUSH THE HANDLE ALL THE WAY UP IT QUITS. YOU HAVE TO PLAY WITH IT ABOUT HALF WAY TO GET IT TO MOVE. WITH THE GRAIN CART HOOKED UP IT USUALLY WONT MOVE. IT TRIES BUT WONT. COULD IT BE THAT IT NEVER WAS USED AND IS STICKING?

I'm not real sure what is wrong here.

Put the tractor in a full right hand turn and shut off the engine. Have an assistant move the PTO full forward and full rearward while you check to see that the PTO rod is moving the outer arm from stop to stop. The lever should want to return rearward with the engine off.

If the outside linkage seems to be moving everything OK and you aren't familiar with this model, now would be a good time to stop and get a guy who has had factory training on this.

There is a chance the internal valve control linkage is bent or broken. If you are patient and have clean work habits and you have access to a repair manual, this might be something you can fix. You will need to remove the left fuel tank and remove the PTO and traction clutch control valve by working through the hole in the side frame. {not easy}

There is also a chance the PTO clutch is too damaged to transmit any power.... Even if it has never been used. This would be a job for the most experienced guy you can find. Even pretty good mechanics manage to do sub-standard work in this area.
