CAN ANYBODY TELL ME THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 9N FORD AND A 2N? IS THERE ANY WAY TO TELL OTHER THAN THE SER. NUMBER?

there is very little difference between the 2,and the 9n now, the 2n was introduced in 1942, as a war production tractor, some came with magneto ignition,no electrical system, hand crank to start and some even had steel wheels, after wwll most of these were retrofitted with starters, lites rubber tires ect, you will need to use the serial number [ which will always start with 9nxxxx] and the chart to the left to tell weather the tractor is a 9 or a 2 n, also a 8n engine will bolt rght in, so dont be suprised if your serial number starts with 8n there seems to be a lot of those out there too

As said, only VERY minor differences between the years....location of starter button, Dash and steering mast go to steel and radius rods changed from 'I' beam type to 'oval' during the last of 9n production, etc. ALL of the parts interchange and start with '9N' so it shouldn't matter much.

Almost no difference other then years made. Later 9Ns used pretty much the same parts as the 2N and only the early 9Ns had the starter button up on the dash. Now on some of the later 2Ns the casting numbers on the axle housings had 2N on them so thats a clue but the serial number is the best way to be sure and even then you can find many mutt tractors that where made from 2 or 3 others

Didn't the 2N's have more "beefed-up" axles or something like that? I think there were some minor upgrades along the way. The "N-Series Originality Guide" gives all the changes by year.
