O/T boat motor

the nieghbour kid has a 7hp boat motor, he asked a question, do you have to drain water out of a boat motor or does it drain its self? we are getting frosty nights lately, well i didnt know but i said i will find out for you, well guys your knowledge is needed.

The engine will drain its self. On older motors I pull both plugs in the lower unit and fill from the bottom plug with marine grease. This will push any water that may have gotten in the lower unit out the top plug. Peavy

As said, self draining. But,, pull the starter cord over a few times to pump out the water out of the impeller and there should be a weep hole above the transom plate to drain the exhaust jacket, make sure that it's open. Probe with wire. Pull plugs and put a table spoon of regular oil in cylinder and turn over a few times to coat the cylinder walls.
Carb should be run dry.
There are also grease fittings on the turning points to be greased. They probably won't be zerks but a weird looking pimple and need a tube of the manufacturer's grease which just plops onto the fitting and squeeze.

Oh...impeller in lower unit is critical...it's the only thing stopping the motor from overheating..it's condition should be checked and maybe it should be replaced. Now, you're getting beyond my capability to explain how to do it without knowing the make and year of the motor.
The impeller is rubber and runs in a housing and is a service item. It self destructs with time and will no longer pump cooling water.

Maybe get him to make sure there's an adult around to help, especially where pulling the motor over is concerned. Don't want him to start it by accident and hurt himself or wreck something.

Self draining IF it is verticle. If tipped up on a boat some water can remain in the prop hub. Drain the gear oil out of the lower unit to check for water. Many lower units are destroyed by the owner not checking for water in the oil then it freezes. If the oil is free of water refill with lower unit gear oil. If milky the prop shaft seal needs to be replaced. If is is stored outside tipped up pour pink anti-freeze in the prop hub. Rain water will collect in there then freeze if you don't.

Question #1 is . . is the motor air-cooled or water cooled? I have several 7 horse outboards that are air-cooled and don't ever pump any water.

If it is water-cooled, it depends much on the motor itself. I have several Homelite (Crosley) four-stroke outboards that retain water in the thermostat housing and it must be drained separately.

To be safe, just pull all the plugs including the gear-oil plug in the bottom drive. It often will have water mixed in with the oil.

Its so light why not just pick it up and take it into a room where its protected and not worry about freezing. If its a mercury or Chrysler put some oil or light lube in the water pump or it will wipe out the first time its started.
