The only problem it had a electrical fire so the fun begins.
 
You were right when you said, "The fun begins".

After all the auto body work I've done over the years, and all the vehicles I've rebuilt, I refuse to work on one that's had an electrical fire. Or any kind of fire.

Not my thing to fix a skidder, especially one that's burnt. I hope you got it for less than 200 bucks, because that thing will equal some cash.
 
I found that a fire doesnt really hurt the engine (internally) except if they put the fire out with water, can you save the lift clynders? D.G.
 
would like to have one like that to play with.
The only trouble would be My wife wouldnt understand the possibility's that has.
 
Jim, I see your S.W Pa. and she's still trying to figure out why your still clinging to your guns and religon and how the heck you got that redneck in Pa. and no you can't have anymore toys unless Obamba and Murtha are elected!!
 
So what is on that EIC board? I know the hour meter is on it but what does it control? The reason I ask is because I was thinking of just replacing it with gauges.
 
I hope you got it for nothing... because by the time you get it fixed you'll have a lot more into it that simply buying a good running machine.

I guess if you don't want any safety system on the machine you could go with all analogue gauges, but I think that would be a shame.
The safety lockouts on that machine are all tied into the pressure pads in the seat and the seatbelt, then tied to the computer. Also, all critical inputs (engine temp, charge pressure and I believe engine oil pressure) are all monitored for automatic shutdown if normal limits are exceeded.
I don't know what it will cost to restore that stuff, but it won't be cheap... but it's sure nice to have.

On top of that you need a fuel tank, hydraulic tank, air cleaner, lights, seat and probably a bunch of other stuff.
I'd suggest that as a first step you pull the loader and cab up to get into the belly. Replace ALL hoses on that machine. In my experience with mine, the Aeroquip hoses have met their life span in 5-7 years. That kind of heat would have finished them. You don't want to do this cheap only to be back inside it a week later. Everything under that seat is an ordeal...

Don't want to rain on your parade, but you might not have what you think you will have when you are done. A lot of times a fire can burn every seal and gasket out of the engine and hydraulic system. Also, depending on the intensity of the fire, could have done some structural damage to the steel. Then after you get all that done, you have the electronics and wiring to contend with. Before I got in too deep with that project, I would be taking a lot of things off, and make sure there is not more damage than what appears on top. good luck.

With all the potential problems, you're going to have, it wouldn't be worth fixing it. That wasn't a small fire. By the time you completely stripped the whole machine down, replaced all the ruined components, you'd be well over what the machine is worth. After you think you'd fixed everything, you'd almost be guaranteed that something else would need fixing. If the hydrostatic pumps and motors need replacing, you're probably looking at at least $5000 and more likely a lot more. I could see rebuilding it cost over $10,000 to do it right. It would be a good machine to sell parts off of, like wheels and tires, maybe cylinders, etc. Even a newer and larger machine would be written off with a fire like that. Dave
 
EIC = Electronic Instrument Cluster.
I was flipping through Messick's parts online... The instrument board is only about ~350 bucks now if memory serves.
The bigger problem that I noticed is that the fuel tank is not priced... that generally implies a lack of supply. You might want to look into that very seriously, very soon if you plan to go ahead with this.
That tank is an injection mold and not easily reproduced due to it's intricate shape...
Scrap is really the best route for that machine I think.
