Why black pipe and not galvanized?

My burner on one of my drying bins rusted out.

It was made out of black. I didn't have any 1/2" black pipe so I made a new burner out of 1/2" galvanized.

Will it work? It's cooking corn as I type this message.

I would guess fumes from the galvanizing as it gets hot could be a concern, if conditions were just right and you were working on it in a confined situation? Don't know for sure though, and I don't think I'd worry the way most driers are set up].

Galvanized pipe in gas applications may or may not have flakes come off the inside of the pipe and plug your orffice. I am a former pork producer and had many LB White heaters to keep running.

When I was in maintenance I was told NEVER use galvanized, always black pipe, schedule 80 or something like that. Thats all I rememeber

The holes in this burner are just under a 1/4" diameter. So if it is little flakes it shouldn't bother to much.

When welding galvanized drinking milk would help from getting sick from the fumes. My guess is worry about fumes off the galvanized from getting hot.

The tracer added to the gas for detecting a leak can loosen the galvanization inside the pipe & possibly plug the gas regulator.

Most guys have touched on it, The nat. gas will loosen the galv. an dplug the regulator and/or gas valve. In an emg. situation, plumb the galv. pipe into a drip leg, which is a black tee installed to the appliance or fixture it serves with the fixture connection coming out the side of the tee and the the straight tru portion of the tee will be vertical. you then plumb the galv. into the top of the tee and on the bottom, you will install a 6 inch or longer nipple with a cap. this is called a drip leg and any foreign particals will drop in that leg and not into the reg. or gas valve. you can remove the cap and dump the foreign particals out

the galvinized coating on the pipe will eventulay flake away and then rust away, im a mechanical contractor and ive seen many galv / alum burners deteriate in a 3 -5 yr time, for what your doing it will work but what your flame, theres a point where your air mixture wont meet the demand of the gas supply, my sudjustion is a good 409 stainless

Galvanized when hot emits a deadly gas that could effect the corn in the long run. I have welded a good bit of the stuff and been very sick from doing the welding

Yup been there done that on the welding Old.

This burner is about 8 inches long and burns at a low temp. There is about 8000 bushel of corn in the bin. Don't think there will be any side affects from the zinc burning.

Ended up with one heck of a headache one nite after brazing together galvanized tubing. I was fine the next day.

I have welded galvanized pipe since but always drink milk when done and that solves the sickness issue.

Galvanized pipe is now legal to use as gas pipe in Washington state. I was told by a plumbing inspector that there has been a change in the manufacturing process. It suprised me to see it . Most places are now using the yellow flex tubing.
As far as using it as burner tubing goes the off gassing would be somewhat of a concern.Would have to see how the burner is setup. Minimal amount of zinc would burn off I would expect.

Gary, just to be safe, check with your gas supplier. What others may not realize is that you are burning liquid, not vapor in your dryer. In Indiana, galvanized has been used for emergency repair for short times but replaced with black pipe as soon as possible.

Don't breath the fumes from welding if at all possible. Metal fume fever from zinc is kind of an allergic reaction but all the other stuff in welding fumes is not good for you at all! Look up manganese exposure for welders...

My boss got chemical pnemonia and a collapsed lung from burning on plated bolts in a confined space:(
