IH 504 glowplug trouble

I have IH 504 diesel tractor. My glow plugs aren"t getting hot so it won"t start. Is there an amperage rate I should be able to test for at each plug? I have 12volts across the switch and glow plug gauge, but nothing at the glow plugs.

Easier to test each glow plug with ohm meter- a good glow plug will have a resistance that's readible on the meter- Ford 6.9 was about 3 ohms, as I recall- but a dead one will have infinite resistance. From your post, it sounds like you're not getting juice to the plugs at all- so that's where to look first.

An easy way to check glow plugs is to disconnect the power wire from them and then take a test light and connect the clip to battery positive and touch the probe to the terminal on the glow plug. If it lights, you have continuity, if not, it's dead. HTH.
Good Luck and God Bless.

Resistance test with an ohm-meter does not work all the time with all plugs. An amp-draw test is more reliable, it puts tests the plugs under real-world use. Hit each plug with full battery current for just a second or two. At 12.5 volts they should draw 7-8 amps each but will vary a bit on what brand plug it is. There is usually no inbetween - either it will draw current - or it won't.

Some IH tractors (B275, B414,424,354,444,2444, etc.) have all plugs hooked in series, i.e. when one goes bad none of the others will work. I don't belive that's the way your's is hooked.

504 or a 2504 ought to have a glow-plug meter hooked to a glow-plug switch - then wired to a terminal block near the engine. That feeds all the glow plugs in parallel.

OEM plug for your tractor is rated 11 volts, 95 watts, and 8.6 amps. Same plug is used in IH D188, D236, D282, and D301 engines.

Numbers for new plugs include 304131R3, 343894R1, 343977R1, 67464, AG40, AG40C, D88516 and D91934.

You can buy new ones on this website. Prices here are just about the best around.

I want to thank all of you for giving me some input. Hopefully, I will get a chance to work on it tonight.

Thanks again,
Randy
