Authorities: 2 killed in explosions at site of Ohio oil well, men had been welding

LA RUE, Ohio (AP) -- Authorities say two men have been killed in a pair of explosions at a central Ohio oil well.
Authorities say 53-year-old Kevin Fout and 45-year-old Jessie Price were doing some welding on an oil storage tank on the property Sunday afternoon when there was one huge explosion followed by another.

Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey says the blasts near the town of La Rue were heard as far as six miles away.

Officials are investigating whether the explosions were sparked by the welding and grinding tools being used. No one else was injured.

La Rue is about 60 miles northwest of Columbus.

For you guys that still want to weld/cut on hydraulic cylinders that have not been pre-cleaned???

While I was hauling fuel awhile back a service station we were re-doing after another company started to remove old tanks, They were trying to weld a hook on the tank when it exploded and killed a nearby worker, the welder somehow only lost his hearing an was maimed for life he was on top of the thank when it exploded.

Another incident last year, A junk man was given two old submersible gas pumps given to him that had layed around outside for a couple years, he tried to cut one with torch for junk when it exploded the force knocked him back against the garage door hurt his back had burns on face and arms.

When I went for schooling, they used to put up all the safety grams of injuries and fatalities. Some were really stupid like welding on oil and gas tanks and stuff. A while back someone on here claimed they cut apart old oil tanks all the time without doing any cleaning. Another stupid one is welding on wheels with the tire still on and inflated. A few people have been killed or seriously injured from that. It's always better to be extra careful than to not be careful enough. Dave

T-Bone;
I was working in my woods yesterday afternoon and heard the explosion. I am not far from Larue. Didn't know what it was. Thought maybe someone was dynamiting stumps or maybe a double sonic boom. Disturbed my dog. I just didn't know any better.
Thanks for telling this... Gene

Full of soapy water maybe. Technique mentioned for emergency use- reduced, but not eliminated, fire/explosion hazard. Army Engineer/Ordinance disposal notes.

If people would use a little common sense AND know what they are doing you can do stuff like weld on oil tanks. I have cut the side out of an old fuel oil tank and I was kind of nervous the whole time but with a little knowledge of what your working with it's not too bad. It takes a higher temp for diesel to actually combust than gas so take a break every 2 feet and work your way around the tank. I would never get near an old gas tank with a grinder or welder or torch. I'm not recommending you cut any tank that ever had fuel in it.

If a tank was to catch fire and/or blow up, it wouldn't care if you had only cut an eigth of an inch! A cutting torch and/or a shower of sparks would light diesel or oil in a second. The fact that you were nervous should have been enough for you to realize the potential danger involved and done something to lessen the danger... like flush the tank out before cutting it. When you're cutting, the temperature doesn't keep going up and up unless it's on a small piece. Your post is kind of contradictory. Dave

Hey T Bone, I agree that welding on anything not knowing what is in it is bad..When I worked with Exxon gas system, we would make hot taps it was called.. Hot taps was welding on the pipeline so they could put in a new site.. The pressure was lowered as much as possible (usually between 500 to 700 psi) and then weld the pipe on the pipeline. After the pipe was welded a saddle was welded on for support.. they used a hot tapping company to cut hole in pipe..have seen a lot of hot taps and a lot of welding on pipe under pressure. All day to day jobs are dangerous if not thought about and talked about..MAY ALL HAVE A SAFE DAY

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

Place up the street from my shop removes underground fuel tanks. Once out , they have any big parking lot they store them in , They have a big wedge that slips on forklift arms, they ram a big hole on each end of tank ,and let it set for week or two ,,then scrappers come and cut them up . wedge makes 3-4 ft holes .

For 30 years I was the one that made hot taps on Gas lines and water lines for The C. I. Thornburg Co Inc. also steam lines . Within the range of 250 LBS or less. our machine was only rated for 250 Lbs at 100 deg. If it was out of that range I didn't make them went to make water tap one time found that pressure was 350 LBS. wouldn't make it . The contracter called owner of Co I worked for , Owner then called me and told me to make tap or he would fire me . I called Oasa when I got back he had a few words but he didn't want to go that route we were a union shop . Under no conditions would I exceed the limits of the machine I was using.
