john deere 870 not shifting

I had put my tractor away this summer. A few days ago I started it up and could not put it in gear while running. With force I was able to get it into second gear, and it runs fine. When I engage the clutch the tractors still runs. Any thought out there on my problem? Thank you Jason

Was it just grinding or what? Sounds like the clutch has rusted to the flywheel. Not all that uncommon. If you can get it moving again,spike the brakes with the clutch pedal pushed down.

Thank you for getting back to me. It was grinding when I shifted it. I was able to get it running and did drive it around on the grass for 15- 20 min stepping on the brake with the clutch in and out no chnages. I did in it reverse as well. Sould I be out on the street? Thank you. Jason
