anybody ever hear of this

Son called about an old chevy pickup with 6 volt system.I never heard of this before.Guy had bought it, but when he trys to start it ,it turns backwards, or lefthanded. All I could think of is wrong starter ,or wrong armature, since reversed cables should not cause it.Do you have any ideas????????????????????????????

some auto type motors used in marine applications run backwards usually in a twin engine applications its a possibility such a starter was laying around and you know the rest of the story batw

I've seen a Cub Cadet mower turn wrong rotation when cables are hooked up backwards ..But , I didn't think a Chevy would do that...Probably a wrong rotation starter..Maybe a starter built for a boat with twins ??

Must be wrong starter. I put an IH starter on an Oliver one time. Bolted right up. Trouble was,the Oliver starter went in from the front, the IH from the rear so it turned the wrong way.

Roy < Golf carts use a starter similar to the S/G on the cubs, they will turn both ways as a motor,to start it, This is how they get reverse because a 2 cycle engine will run backwards or front wards.

You have to have MORE than the wrong armature, as the starter drive would just "overrun" and the engine would not crank if the starter was simply running backwards.

Have you verified it's REALLY cranking backwards?

If a starter motor was running backward, I would think the drive gear would not engage. Doesn't it have to spin clockwise to engage the drive gear to the flywheel? So to me it must be a totally wrong starter that happened to bolt up. Pull the starter and take to the bench to verify it is turning backward.
