Somewhat OT- origin of traditional animal names

I've always wondered why names for certain animals always show up in literature- Dobbin for horses, Bossie or Bessie for cows, etc... I have been told that Fido for dogs comes from the Latin for loyalty and Felix for cats comes from Feline, but does anyone know the origins for other common names for animals? Is it old literary or pop culture references or something else?

I think it is just a preferance when you name a pet. I named my shitzu Bandit because he stole my heart the first time I met him. And when he gets the chance he is stealing shoes and hides them to keep us with him.

Jack and Jenny are the gender of mules, not nessessarly their names. Billy is refered to as a male goat[ not sure why when a female is a doe.]

Bos is Latin for cattle.

"Get up" is the Oxen command for move forward, and I've heard them use "Get up bos!" when they mean the team rather then individuals.

I can't figgure why they call geese a flock and a a herd of sheep the same--[flock of sheep]when actually a flock of geese are reffered to as a gaggle of geese.

Some good friends of mine always call their cows when they feed them. When they do, they holler "Come bos". I always wondered what that meant. Their parents are Portuguese. I guess bos means cattle in Portuguese, too.
