OT: Can I put a KATS recirculating heater in my '93 Regal ?

I heard that it is not recommended on certain cars. It has the vacuum controlled heater switching and I heard that things can get messed up by putting these on certain vehicles.

Standard block heaters are supposedly a real challenge on these vehicles.

P.s. What's the "Y" fitting in these kits used for ?

Thanks in advance.

Here's the kit I'm referring too...

You can install it on just about any automotive engine . . . if you can find a low spot in the block to tap in to. That's the biggest problem since many auto engines don't have a good spot (like a low block drain). You need a low spot on the block to hook to the heater-inlet, and a high spot on engine for the other connection. That's what the "Y" is for. The "Y" is used to splice into an existing heater hose. You don't need it if you have a better source - like a pipe-plug in the thermostat housing or water manifold.
In regard to the vacuum control valve - the heater does not interfere at all. Just make sure you get it installed vertical so the check-valve on the bottom works properly.

You may be able to tap into the lower radiator hose with a home-made adapter, or the drain petcock at the bottom of the radiator for that "low spot on the engine." I've used both with some success. In the past, some of the older cars I have had were well served by having a heater of that type. I have been using freeze plug type on current engines. Work very well too, especially on cold fearing diesels.

From what I've seen - tapping the lower raditator hose, or radiator itself does't work very well. You wind up pulling cold water out of the bottom of the radiator instead of the engine. Then the circulation loop gets so big, the radiator gets included - and it cools off the water as fast as it gets heated. I've got a GM 6.2 diesel I tried in on, since I couldn't find a good lower-engine tap and it's useless that way - and that's with a 2000 watt heater.
